For spring 2018, Gelish has introduced the Royal Temptations collection. “Inspired by the lavish life of Marie Antoinette, the collection includes six delicious shades. Opulent pastels of sea foam green, teal, purple, pink and coral help to convey the romantic fantasy we associate with being a queen. For an even sweeter nail look, add on Over-the-Top Pop, a special effect glitter that you can’t help but adore.”

Gelish brings us Royal Temptations for Spring 2018

Gelish debuted their Spring 2018 collection in the February issue of Nails Magazine, and I’m as excited as ever to see the ads. Actually, I probably get more excited when the spring collection is released because I’m ready for some bright cheerful colors after a long winter.  And this year Gelish certainly gives us something to look forward to!

The collection is called Royal Temptations, and the color names call to mind famous royal figures in 18th century France: “Beauty Marks the Spot” reminds us that in the 18th century royal court, beauty marks were all the rage to the point that false ones were applied to certain places on one’s face, depending on the message you wanted to convey to the beholder… remember Madame Du Barry, King Louis XV’s infamous mistress? And what queen’s wig could be more famous than Marie Antoinette’s, who loved all things fashionable and sumptuous? Yep, Gelish nailed it with the names for these polishes!

I think clients are going to love these. The seafoam green/blue color seems to have been really popular the last couple years, and shows no signs of fading popularity, so Ruffle Those Feathers will probably be a hit.  The traditionalists will love Curls & Pearls and Beauty Marks the Spot. And, if you’re like me you’re always looking for a pretty lilac (light purples seem to be a rarity for Gelish thus far)… and All the Queen’s Bling seems like it will fit the bill!

New Gelish Brush and Bottle

Matadora Collection final with watermark

As of Summer 2017, Gelish has updated their gel polish formulation, as well as the full-size bottle and brush. The new formulation, according to Gelish®, is:

  • enhanced for better stability
  • product flow improved
  • easier to lay down
  • smoother

What’s the same?

  • smooth application
  • streak-free and shiny
  • chip-free for up to 21 days

I never had any issues with the Gelish formulation, so honestly it just seems like the same great product to me!

The new bottle features:

  • A similar overall shape to the already-familiar Morgan Taylor® & Gelish Dip bottle design
  • Shrink-wrapped, enclosed bottle with larger color call-out dot,  and color band

New bottle pros:

  • Branding continuity within the Hand and Nail Harmony brand
  • Opaque wrapper with no window means you won’t have your Gelish curing inside the bottle (due to being exposed unintentionally to UV light, including ambient UV light in the room)
  • color band can be seen from almost any angle
  • More difficult to counterfeit

New bottle cons:

  • Old bottles now seem outdated
  • Gelish has re-named some of their old colors to match them to Gelish Dip and Morgan Taylor color names

The new brush features:

  • dome-bristled brush
  • increased bristle count
  • ergonomic cap

New brush pros:

  • smooth application with full coverage
  • increased product control when polishing in the cuticle area
  • helps pick-up the perfect amount of product
  • cap flares out at the base, which makes it slightly easier to grip and position in the hand

The new brush really does make a big difference! I thought it wouldn’t, but was surprised at how much these seemingly minor tweaks enhanced application. Check out the Smoke and Mirrors YouTube channel for my in-depth brush comparison and test video to see the difference!

New brush cons:

  • Old brushes aren’t as easy to use, by comparison

Final Thoughts:

Overall, I love the new design and, for brand recognition reasons, this was clearly a great move for Gelish. I’ve been a Gelish user for almost a decade now, and I’m looking forward to many years of using this excellent product for myself and my clients. There’s just a tiny part of me, the OCD part of my brain, that is a bit ticked with all the name changes. But I guess that’s progress and we’ll have to be understanding about it!
